Firefighters Battle Huge Blaze at Forum de Beyrouth

Two firefighters were injured on Thursday as several firefighting engines struggled to control a huge blaze that gutted the Forum de Beyrouth, the state-run National News Agency reported.

The fire, which erupted in the early morning rush hour, caused heavy traffic on the Dora-Karantina highway where the center lies.

The blaze was likely sparked by an electric short-circuit where the cables and equipment are stored.

It quickly spread to other areas and firefighters failed to contain it although the Beirut firefighting department lies a few hundred meters away.

The firefighters later contained the blaze in a 100-meter-square area after it had spread to the entire 10,000 meter square surface of the center.

They brought it under control a few hours later.

One firefighter, Hassan Meselmani, was injured when part of a ceiling collapsed on him and Jammal Hawa suffered cuts in his hand.

Meselmani was hospitalized but Hawa was treated on the scene.

Forum de Beyrouth is a multipurpose center for various types of events, mainly fairs and expositions.
