The Trump administration released the transcript of his call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
USA TODAYWASHINGTON – House Speaker Nancy Pelosi invoked the last scandal that took down a president in accusing the White House on Thursday of trying to hide details of President Donald Trump’s call with the Ukrainian president.”This is a cover up. This is a cover up,” Pelosi said in a phase long associated with the Watergate investigation that led to President Richard Nixon’s resignation in 1974.The whistleblower described White House officials’ efforts to “lock down” information about the call in which Trump solicited foreign help to discredit one of his main political rivals, Joe Biden.Speaking to reporters a few hours after the complaint was publicly released, Pelosi emphasized that the impeachment inquiry she announced Tuesday is directed at the latest revelations.“The consensus in our caucus is that our focus now is on this allegation,” she said, adding that other ongoing investigations related to Trump’s actions will “be considered later.”Pelosi said the inquiry will proceed under the auspices of the Intelligence Committee, which is “where this matter is relevant.”The speaker gave no deadline for the inquiry and said no conclusions have been made about what might be included in any articles of impeachment.”The facts will determine the timeline,” she said.More: Read the full declassified text of the Trump whistleblower complaintUS Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi talks during her weekly press briefing on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, on Sept. 26 2019. (Photo: ANDREW CABALLERO-REYNOLDS, AFP/Getty Images)Pelosi made a personal dig at Trump when she scoffed about his claims that a summary of his call released Wednesday showed no explicit threat of punishment or promise of reward to the Ukrainian president unless he investigate the Biden family.”While the president thinks that this is exculpatory – maybe he doesn’t know that word – the president thinks that this proves his innocence only goes to show how further he doesn’t understand right from wrong,” Pelosi said. The White House released a five-page summary of the call Wednesday after its existence became known because of the whistleblower’s complaint to an intelligence community watchdog.White House officials told the whistleblower that they were “directed” by White House lawyers to remove the electronic transcript of the call from the computer system that stores them for coordination, finalization and distribution to Cabinet-level officials, according to the complaint.Officials also said that the steps taken to protect the contents of the calls were not the first time that a transcript of Trump’s conversation was put into a code-word-secured system solely to protect information that was politically sensitive rather than a national security concern, according to the whistleblower.”Whatever other explanation there might be, an explanation is also that it is a cover-up,” Pelosi said. The saying “It’s not the crime, it’s the cover-up” originated with Watergate as Congress investigated Nixon’s attempt to cover-up a burglary of Democratic headquarters at the Watergate hotel.AutoplayShow ThumbnailsShow CaptionsLast SlideNext SlideRead or Share this story: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2019/09/26/impeachment-pelosi-whistleblower-account-shows-trump-cover-up/3774209002/
